President Welling,
I just found out about this. It's been over a year and I am sorry that this is so belated. I was so happy to have you and Sister Welling as my leaders in my mission, as I don't know if I would have responded well to any others. I will never forget her strawberry butter, as I have not had any since, and the pleasant coincidence that she was at the temple the day I got married. My heart goes out to you and your family. She was a very special woman.

President Welling and family,
I just heard of Sister Welling's passing and wanted to express my love and condolences to you and your family. I loved Sister Welling and couldn't wait to see her at Zone Conferences, Sister's Conferences and at Church. Her smile would light up a room and her testimony was infallible. I, too, will miss her. The gospel IS true and we still love you!

I just talked with my parents (Newel and Barbara Linford) and they could not say enough about how special President Welling and Carla are to them. They love them so much. Sister Welling taught me how to read music and play the piano. I just loved her. I love the Welling family as does everyone else, you truly are special people. Brad and Susan mean a lot to me also and hope you are doing okay. Love, Patti

Dear Welling Family,
What a wonderful funeral you held for our dearest Carla! Each of you children gave such a great gospel message flavored with many Carla addributes and qualities. It was so uplifting and inspirational. She deserves the best and that's exactly what she got on Monday thanks to her great family. There was such a large crowd that I never made it into the Relief Society room to express my love to you all.
My favorite memories of Carla date back to our trip to Israel with Grandpa Richards. She and I were roommates and it was so fun to be with her. She was so deeply touched and affected by everything she saw and heard, and yet she was full of fun, excitement and adventure. She missed you all very much and now we will all miss her. My love and prayers go out to you all. Take care. Love, Shauna
P.S. Next week I will go to the temple as instructed to do so by Carla!

Dear Brother Welling, I just learned of Carla's passing. Even though I'm unable to be at the funeral, my heart is with you. I pray the comforter will be with you and that you will feel our Savior's love for you and your family. My mother passed away in July, so my feelings are very tender for what you must be feeling. Dear President Welling and family:
Were everyone so lucky as to have known Carla Welling, and to be able to call her their friend. She IS such a special example and mentor. She was my ideal. She was the perfect (yes perfect) example of what a person should be. I love and admire her so much, and will miss having her presence.
I admired Carla in so many ways. She was a true leader, and example. I don't think I have ever met anyone quite like her. In fact, when I think of the person I would like to be most like, it would be Carla.
I remember one of my first experiences with Carla was going up to the house for a Relief Society garden party. I was admiring her garden, and in particular her beautiful daisies. I was putting my own yard in at the time, and just a few days later she was at my doorstep. She had lovingly removed two varieites of daisy clumps for me to divide and place in my new flowerbeds. They soon flourished. Upon building this home, it was a condition of the sale that I be able to take some starts of those same daisies--and now they grow profusely throughout my garden. I have continued Carla's example and have given starts that now grow throughout Utah, in Idaho, and Arizona. It is truly "the gift that keeps on giving. I think it very symbolic of Carla and her life.
I know that we now have the opportunity to celebrate this dear woman's life. We all know where she will be, and with her testimony ahd instruction, have a clear knowledge & believe in the Atonement, and how it applies to all our lives.
There will be the necessary time to mourn, and we will grieve with you. I also know, however, that though there will be tears running down your cheeks, you will be flooded with precious memories of her sweet spirit, her famous smile, and her quick humor. Her funny "quips" will shine through your sorrows, and a smile on your face will accompany your glistening eyes. She would have it no other way.
Wendy and Kathy, my thoughts and hugs especially go out to you. It is not easy for a daughter to lose a mother. There is such a special bond there that can never be replaced, particularly as you go forward as mothers yourselves. I hope to see you often, and when we do I promise you we will embrace and reminisce of this very special mother of yours. I will miss her with you, cry with you, and of course laugh with you. It will be just be understood that we will long for the time when we can do the same with her. And we will.
To President Welling and the rest of the family, may you have peace in your hearts. I know she will be with you in spirit, and will be allowed to dwell with you whenever you have need for her to comfort you.
What a special marriage you two have! What examples you both are to all of us. No one can forget Santa and Mrs. Claus. My children still talk of these visits to our home. My new son-in-law speaks fondly of a kind and loving mission president and his wife. Leaders who made the real challenges of a mission do-able. My daughter and their children thank you for that memory & and foundation in their marriage. Dan thinks and speaks very highly of both of you. He remembers Carla with fondness and deep admiration--
a very special Mission mother.
You have come in and out of our lives, helping to bring color, strengthen, and weave the threads of each of our own personal tapestries.
Thank you for being who you are--a great family. And thank you for sharing this remarkable person with us. She is with God...until we meet again.......
Love and Hugs to you all!

To the Welling Family,
We want you all to know our heartfelt love and prayers are with all of you at this time. We have thought of all of you often over the years. You have a special place in our hearts as we expressed in the letter we sent to your family in October 2003. As we mentioned in that letter what an angelic person Sister Welling was and is. We are glad we were able to complement and give her those expressions of love at that time instead of leaving them unsaid until she could not hear them. We are now serving a full time mission in the Provo, Utah Mission assigned to the St. George Visitors Center and Historical Sites for 18 months so we will be unable to attend the services. May the love and sweet comforting spirit of the Holy Ghost attend all of you.
Your Eternal Friends,
Ray and Donna Jones

I just learned of the sad news of the passing of Sister Welling. As I began to reflect on how I came to know her and her wonderful husband, my saddness began to diminish as I remembered her loving and devoted service to her brothers and sisters while on her mission in Iowa and while serving in the Bountiful Temple. Sister Welling will be missed, but her legacy will be carried on through all those she served and loved. It was, and still is, an honor to know the Wellings. My heartfelt condolences to you, President Welling, your family and friends.

Dear President Welling,
You and Sister Welling were a great blessing to us in Iowa when you were out here. Heavenly Father has blessed many people through you two. Thank you for your service, and God bless your wonderful wife for the support she was able to give you over the years. Sister Welling is a fine person and will be sorely missed by all that knew her. We often think a day like this should be further out into the future and are never quite prepared for it when it happens. But we know of course, that our loved ones are never really all that far away. Again, thanks. Earl.

President Welling, Sept 22, 2006
I am saddened to hear about our loss. I am out of town for business meetings and will miss the funeral but know that I wish I could be there. Ever since I heard the news, my heart has been saddened. My thoughts and prayers go out for you in this difficult time.
- - To our Missionary Mom, with whom I shared a common birthday. I'll cherish all the missionary memories, especailly the one of going to a birthday pancake breakfast with you and President in Iowa City. You made a great impact on many people's lives. Thank you for your example.
President! I love you and Sister Welling, and the gospel is true.

Dear President Welling,
May the Lord bless you and your family in the loss of your sweet and pretty wife, mother and dear grandmother.
The parting is temporary, of course, but there is still pain. Because of the atonement of our Lord, Jesus Christ, we will all be together again as families.
What a marvelous blessing for us to hope for with assurance and keep in our minds and hearts each day.
May you be comforted through the wonderful blessing of the Holy Ghost. May our Heavenly Father lift you up that you may continue in His glorious work here on the earth until you are with your loved one again.
My prayers are with you.
Sincerely, Lila Bernice Weeks Reed

Our Dear Welling Family,
We feel as if a very important part of our Smoot family has just gone home to the Great God who gave her life. We share so many fond memories from our mission time.
Please know that our thoughts and prayers are with your entire family and especially with our dear Mission President.
Life is eternal and we know this but the greiving is also real. Where there is much love there is much grief now but oh how much JOY there will be when we are all reunited again.
We love you!
