Reid Henry Davis
Reid H. Davis, age 79, our cherished husband, father, brother and grandfather completed his earthly mission and returned to his Heavenly Father on Friday morning, January 22, 2010 surrounded by his wife and all his children.
Reid was born on July 12, 1930, in Provo, Utah, to Owen M. Davis and Magdelena W. (Lena) Hollermann Davis, and was the third of five children. He grew up in Wayne County, but was happiest working and playing on the family farm in Fruita, which has since become part of Capitol Reef National Park. Reid had great musical talents and played string bass, saxophone, and piano. He also sang in school choirs growing up.
He loved fishing and picnicking with his family at Pine Creek on Boulder Mountain, Johnson Valley Reservoir, Fish Lake and the Bicknell Bottoms on the Fremont River. Reid enjoyed deer hunting because it provided an opportunity to camp out and enjoy the beauties of nature while providing the family with meat to last the winter.
Education was extremely important in the Davis household, and Reid graduated from Brigham Young University, majoring in Music Education. He served in the Spanish-American mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in South Texas. His mission turned out to be one of the most outstanding experiences of his young life. He loved the Latin American people and the Spanish language, which he spoke fluently.
After his mission, he returned to BYU, where he met his future wife, Vaudis Barson. After a whirlwind September to June courtship, they were married in the St. George Temple on June 10, 1955. They were blessed with eight children in whom he took great pride. He loved his family, and always enjoyed get-togethers.
Reid loved spending his summers working as a Forest Ranger in various parts of the state. He spent most of his career teaching Music and Spanish in high schools and middle schools. Reid enjoyed producing high school musicals and taking his choirs on tour. He was also privileged to be a member of the Mormon Tabernacle Choir for thirteen years, and was able to travel to different parts of the world on several of those tours.
Reid loved to work hard, and he did, despite the struggles he endured because of his failing physical body. Back injuries at an early age gave him challenges that lasted his entire life, but he was always a fine example to his family. We love him dearly, and will miss having him in our daily lives.
Reid is survived by his wife, Vaudis, his children, Gregory, Valerie, Jeffrey, Melanie, Karalee, Kimberly and Jonathan; Grandchildren, Katie, Kristy, Lance, Jared, Jessica, Rachael, Marissa, Tyler, Zachary, Madison, Isaac, Brooklyn, McKinley and eight Great-Grandchildren. Siblings, Albert, Yvonne, Marylyn and Eldon, also survive him. He is preceded in death by both parents and baby Daughter, Joanna Davis.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday, January 27, 2010 at 11:00 a.m. at the Kaysville 9th Ward Chapel, 201 South 600 East, Kaysville.
Reid's viewing will be held at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 1941 North Main Street, Farmington, on Tuesday, January 26, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and Wednesday at the ward Chapel from 10:00 to 11:00 a.m.
Internment will be at the Huntsville Cemetery.
The family would like to express thanks to the kind-hearted staff at North Canyon Care Center in Bountiful, and the VistaCare Hospice.
Condolences may be sent to the family at www.russonmortuary.com.
