Ariel George Gudmundson, 77, loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and friend, passed away peacefully surrounded by his devoted family, at Lakeview Hospital on Friday, May 19, 2006 at 9:44 a.m. He was born July 3, 1928 in Logan, Utah, a son of Arthur Daniel Gudmundson and Annie Maria Bingham Gudmundson. He met his eternal companion, Bonnie Virginia Stucki, at the University of Utah in 1947 where they were students. They were married August 31, 1950 in the Salt Lake LDS Temple. As a graduate from Logan High School, Ariel was awarded the Bosch and Lomb Science Award. He continued his education at the University of Utah graduating with B.S. degrees in Biochemistry (1950) and in Pharmacy (1956). He received his M.D. degree from the University of Utah Medical School (1961). He completed his internship at the Holy Cross Hospital, Salt Lake City, and his residency in Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of California at San Francisco and Highland General Hospital in Oakland, California (1967). Dr. Gudmundson began his practice in Bountiful and soon became Board Certified in Obstetrics and Gynecology. As one of the first specialists in private practice in the Bountiful area, he worked tirelessly to recruit other specialists to the community. He was instrumental with others in the construction of the medical office complex at 425 Medical Drive. This complex was completed before Lakeview Hospital was completed. Known affectionately by his colleagues, patients, and friends as Doc Goodie, or simply Goodie, he delivered over 5, 000 babies during his career. Ariel retired from private practice in 1989 and joined the staff of FHP in Salt Lake City for one year. During his later years, Ariel became a self-taught computer expert, using his computer skills to bless the lives of his family and friends. Not only did he act as advisor and consultant, but he quietly and unobtrusively produced multiple materials to assist them in their many endeavors. These included formatting, editing, and publishing books, booklets, and family biographies. He was a true patriarch to his family, helping them with medical problems, and lending interest and support in whatever they attempted to do. A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he helped and supported his wife in many church callings, the latest of which was unofficially serving as co-director of the North Canyon Fifth Ward name extraction program. He believed in serving the Lord and his fellow-men in a quiet, unpretentious way, without recognition or fanfare. His greatest joys came in spending time with his family: Fishing and camping at Flaming Gorge, family picnics and work parties, special walks through the “toolies” and long talks, timely soireés, visits with his “clan,” scientific “lectures” and trivia sharing, Igor impressions complete with limp and plastic fangs, pulling loose teeth, and in doing kind things for others. Preceding him in death were his parents; brothers: Arthur D. Gudmundson, Jr., and Serge B. Gudmundson; and sisters: Anna Madall Gudmundson and Montana Gudmundson Stock. Surviving are his wife, Bonnie Stucki Gudmundson; brother, Westerdahl W. Gudmundson; children: Diane Lucy (Henry) Gardner, Connie Ann (Steve) Hadden, Denise Allaine (Kenneth) Jones, Lois Jan (Richard) Crawley, Carol Lyn (Scott) Lemon, and Byron James (Cheryl) Gudmundson; twenty-six grandchildren; eleven great-grandchildren and three more on the way. Funeral Services will be held Tuesday, May 23, 2006 at 11:00 a.m. at the North Canyon Fifth Ward LDS Chapel, 2505 So. Davis Blvd., Bountiful, Utah. Family and friends may pay respects on Monday evening, May 22, 2006, at Russon Brother’s Mortuary, 295 No. Main, Bountiful, Utah between 6:00 and 8:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday May 23, 2006 at the church before the funeral from 9:45 to 10:45 a.m. Interment, Bountiful City Cemetery, 2224 S. 200 W. Online guest book and direction map available at www.russonmorutary.com. In lieu of flowers, send donations to American Heart Association.
